LSU Athletes Drafted #1 Overall Across All Sports Drafts
LSU is an athletic powerhouse. You can't just say "football powerhouse" or "baseball powerhouse", because LSU has a well-rounded game.
If you look at the National Championships LSU athletics have won, you will see a WIDE range. There are over 50 National Championship LSU has claimed...and that's just the team sports. When you look at individual National Championships, LSU has another 230+ to add in.
On the individual side, LSU has had National Champions in Tennis, Swimming & Diving, Gymnastics, Golf, and Boxing. But most of those individual titles came in Track & Field, both Indoor and Outdoor.
In team sports, LSU has won National Championships in Track & Field, Golf, Boxing, Football, both Men's and Women's Basketball, & Baseball. If you don't remember that Men's Basketball Championship, we can't blame you. It came in the 1935 season and isn't officially recognized by the NCAA. That season, LSU took on Pitt in Atlantic City at the end of the season for a game promoted as the "National Collegiate Championship", and game LSU won. But without an "official" tournament, LSU's title is not recognized by all.
Now lets take a moment to mash both of these concepts together...team sports and individual accomplishments. There's not really a National Championship for individuals on teams. You could point to the Heisman Trophy, or various Player of the Year awards, but I would suggest being the #1 overall draft pick to the professional side of the sport you play is right up there.
Sure, there are other things that go into become a #1 draft pick in every sport. Team needs, chemistry, financial aspects...but most of the time the talent rises to the top of the draft board. In LSU's case, that has happened a lot. Across a wide set of sports.
In American sports, there are 5 major sports drafts. These include the NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, and NHL. Now obviously LSU hasn't had a #1 overall pick in the NHL Draft, because LSU doesn't have an ice hockey program. But as far as the other four go, LSU has had a #1 overall draft pick in each of those drafts.
