Senate Education Committee Chairman Cleo Fields dropped a bombshell on Louisiana's top school board yesterday.  He asked that the panel cancel all fall sports and athletic activities for public schools in the state.

According to the report from the Advocate, this includes: ..."All activities of any kind that would include student in-person participation in a group setting, including conditioning, practice and team meetings."

This will be one of the many issues the board will have to tackle for the upcoming school year, including: start dates, safety policies, testing, and more.  According to the report, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) will most likely convene an emergency meeting to discuss and decide what emergency minimum standards are necessary for reopening for the 2020-2021 school year.

Fields says that this request is based on the failure to "adequately address the issue of public school sports," in light of the guidelines released last month by the Department of Education (DOE) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
