Legislature Considers Statewide Rules for Ride Sharing Services
The Louisiana House is considering a new law that would establish statewide rules for ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Under the proposed bill, the state would collect one percent of the services' gross receipts, with some of the money being returned to the local governments where the rides took place.
Officials from cities where ride sharing companies currently operate say the bill would cost them a lot of money. New Orleans alone says the new law would cause the city to lose over two million dollars a year.
The state would also take over control of licensing, driver requirements and permits.
