Lady Antebellum Dish on Rising Success, Play ‘We Owned the Night’ on ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’
Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood — the talented musicians of Lady Antebellum
— joined Jimmy Fallon on his late-night show on Wednesday night (May 2), bringing with them their chipper attitudes, despite it being after hours. The trio chatted about their world tour, their rising success, what their shows used to be like and what’s coming up for them before picking up their instruments and putting on a live performance.
To kick off the interview, Fallon asked the trio about their tour, including a big gig they’ve got lined up. The group is due to perform as the opener for an upcoming Bruce Springsteen show in London. To prepare for the show, Kelley said that Lady A would have to take the Boss’ original hit, ‘I’m on Fire,’ out of their set.
“We have to take our cover of ‘I’m on Fire’ out of the set,” Kelley said, referring to a cover they do. “That would be pretty uncool — we did it for a long time, a couple of years, but I’m pretty sure we’re not going to play it that night.”
Fallon joked (with his best impersonation of Bruce Springsteen) that Lady A should play an entire setlist of Springsteen covers.
Now that Lady A is on their own headlining world tour, and performing alongside the likes of the Boss, it’s funny to listen to them recall the kind of shows they used to play.
“We actually played at gas station the day that deer season opened in West Virgina,” Scott admitted.
Collectively, the band also recalled playing lots of coffee shops — and even pontoon boats. Once, while playing on a moving pontoon, Haywood had a bit too much to drink and ended up taking off his shirt for all of his fans. The three bandmates shook their heads and laughed as Kelley re-told the story.
The talented trio admitted that it’s probably good that they have new management now. After a few minutes of joking around with Fallon, Lady A took the stage to perform ‘We Owned the Night,’ their hit single from the ‘We Own the Night’ album.
