Rumor has it that the Central Texas Stampede may make a return to Bell County. While there hasn't been anything official confirming their return, let's take a look back to reminisce about how awesome it was to have a hockey team right there in our own back yard.

Hockey Comes to Belton

In the late 90s/early 00s, the Central Texas Stampede brought fast-paced hockey action to Belton, providing fans with something completely different than the traditional Friday night lights. They were part of the Western Professional Hockey League but to folks in the know, they were our team. When the lights came on at the Bell County Expo Center, you could feel the energy in the air. Kids decked out in jerseys, parents holding foam fingers, and the sounds of skates on the ice made this a feeling that Belton had its own piece of the NHL right here in Texas.

Fights That Fired Up the Crowd

The Stampede were tough. There is nothing more legendary than the brawl between Todd St. Louis and Peter Zurba when the Lake Charles team came for a visit. Then there was the wild fight between the Waco Wizards Brad Demonsky and David Oliver. These weren't just rough times. These were gloves-on-the-ice boxer brawls that had fans standing and screaming. It was gritty, it was raw, and it was fantastic to watch.

Talent on the Ice

But the Stampede weren't just brawlers. They had some real talent on the ice. Players like Brad Sweet were goal scorers and the goaltender Nick Wise made highlight reel saves that kept the Stampede in the game. Winning or losing, the games were always entertaining.

Community Support

The team was also a part of the community off the ice. They held youth hockey clinics, visited schools, and made every kid in the audience feel they were part of something special. They had local businesses behind them, and families made it a tradition to come to the game.

The Legacy Lives on

The official team may not be around, but the memories still hit hard. The red, black, and silver jersey gives a nostalgic glance back to when Belton was a hockey town. And if they ever come back, you know those same fans will come back with them to cheer just as loudly as before.

Until then, we'll keep the videos running, the memories alive, and the hope that one day, the Stampede will ride on in Bell County.

The Ruins of Sparta and Bland Lie Deep Beneath Belton Lake

Beneath the placid waters of Belton Lake lay the bones of two towns where people you know may have grown up. When Belton Dam was constructed in the mid-1900's, the towns were emptied for the sake of "water and progress", as one Bland resident panned.
