If you were contemplating taking a road trip for the July 4th holiday just one year ago, chances are you were having to budget your money a lot tighter than you might have to budget your funds today. Louisiana motorists and drivers in general across the country have gotten some great news for their summertime drives, especially when you compared the cost of last year's trip to this year's.

Of course, the leading economic indicator for the motoring public is the price of gas. As goes the price of fuel, so go we as a nation. When the price of gas is a little lower at the pump we tend to drive further and stay longer. When the numbers get bigger on the gas pump's digital dial we tend to dial back our excursions and vacation closer to home.

Let's test your memory. Fill in the blank, last year at this time the average price for a gallon of regular fuel across America was ______ and in Louisiana it was________. Unless you're in the oil and gas industry you're not going to know but here are the numbers that correctly fill in those blanks. The national average price for a gallon of regular on June 28, 2022, was $4.89. In Louisiana, we were paying $4.41 a gallon for regular.

Fast forward to this year and according to the American Automobile Association, Louisiana drivers are paying $3.01 on average for a gallon of regular fuel. That national average price is down considerably too. It's listed at $3.56. That's a savings of $1.33 nationally and for Louisiana drivers we are paying $1.40 cents per gallon less than we were this time last year.

Heck if you did just two 16-gallon fill-ups over the course of your trip this year you'll be saving almost $50 bucks just on fuel costs. You could use that extra $50 to spend on junk at Buc-ee's or just put it in your pocket for all those expenditures you'll have when school starts in about six weeks. Nah, let's not think about that, enjoy your trip and enjoy the savings, at least while they last.
