Some Republicans May Have Now Had Enough Of Bill Cassidy
Louisiana's State Treasurer John Fleming announced that he will run for the Senate, directly opposing incumbent Senator and fellow Republican Bill Cassidy.
- Fleming claims that Cassidy "has failed the people of Louisiana."
- Cassidy's Senate seat will be up for election in 2026
Last Wednesday John Fleming, the current State Treasurer of Louisiana, put out in a news release that he will be running in the 2026 midterm elections, specifically to oust sitting incumbent Bill Cassidy. Bill Cassidy has yet to announce his intent to run in 2026 but in comments made to the Associated Press (AP) a spokesperson for Cassidy stated that he will be running in 2026. Though in the same comments made to the AP the same spokesperson said that when it's time to focus on the race, Cassidy will "see who is still in the race."
John Fleming, and many other Republicans, have taken issue with Cassidy after his part in the trial to impeach President Trump after the January 6th, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.
“A number of Republicans walked away from President Trump in the last year of his first term, but those who turned their backs on him and America First were not committed to his fight to make America great again. Louisiana citizens did not give up on this fight.” - John Fleming
John Fleming aims to rejoin the U.S. Congress, where he used to serve as Louisiana's 4th district representative from 2009 to 2017. Fleming has been a notable and vocal supporter of then-President Donald Trump, serving as the Assistant to the President for Planning and Implementation, Assistant Secretary for Health Information Technology Reform, and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development.
