New Orleans Celebrates UFC 318’s Record-breaking Turnout
New Orleans and all of Louisiana is celebrating UFC 318. Not only was it an action packed night in New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center, but it was a record breaking one!
According to WDSU, the event drew 18,138 to see Louisiana native Dustin Poirier's last fight. But, on top of that, the Smoothie King Center set the record for the highest gate in the event center's history at $8.09 million!
Governor Jeff Landry has taken to social media to celebrate the record breaking night!
Why Was UFC 318 So Successful in Louisiana?
The biggest draw of the night was of course Lafayette native Dustin Poirier. Not only was "Diamond" Dustin in the main event, but it was the final fight of his career. And in this state, Dustin is a LEGEND.
He turned pro in 2009, fighting all across Louisiana and surrounding states. Dustin's early years fighting in Louisiana was documented in the film 'Fightville'. Since then, he became one of the most beloved fighters in MMA - especially at home in Louisiana - for his toughness and grit.
Plus, there were other regional ties on the card including Kevin Holland, who fights and trains in Fort Worth, Texas. So, not only was it a major event, it had tons of local ties to get the fans invested.
What's Next For Louisiana Legend Dustin Poirier?
Now that his professional fighting career is over with, what's next for Dustin Poirier? Well, the possibilities seem endless - especially on the business front. In 2020, he launched a brand of hot sauces called "Poirier's Louisiana Style". In 2022, Dustin launched a brand of bourbon called 'Rare Stash Bourbon'.
Beyond his business ventures, he started a non-profit called the "Good Fight Foundation" - which helps raise money for underserved communities around the world, but specifically in Louisiana.

Beyond his business and philanthropic endeavors, Dustin has dabbled in acting and training. So, really there's a lot of stuff he could do. But, the one thing he mentioned numerous times leading up to UFC 318 is that his long-term plan is just to be more present for his wife and kids. Can't hate a guy for that.
Whatever ends up being the next chapter of his life and career, I'm sure he'll be great at it and have a huge impact on whatever he touches.
