The Most Searched Slang Words In Louisiana For 2025
Stop. What is the latest "slang" word you learned? Chillax? Da bomb? Hella? Phat? Slay? YOLO? On Fleek? Home skillet?
All of that would make you sound really old talking to Gen Z. There's a new generation pushing their way into the pop culture world, and their bringing their own slang with them. Some of it is easy to understand, others are completely out there, because there's something different with this generation that hasn't been seen in previous generations.
There is a massive portion of Gen Z that is drawn to absurdity.
This generation LOVES absurd humor. They are all in on the joke; while some from other generations will look at whatever Gen Z is laughing at and be totally confused. They love memes that are low quality images, with bad text and graphics added, that might not even make sense when you read it. Or you'll see an airbrushed style werewolf image that has all caps text about MY TOUGHEST TEST...and then its about pancakes or something.
But there is another mass change with the comedic tastes of Gen Z compared to previous generations. They love dark humor.

This dark humor generally involves being self-deprecating, using happy graphics with horrific text, or even making jokes about massive tragedies. Especially tragedies that occurred before they were born...but its not limited to that.
Where absurdity and dark humor meet: Brainrot
You might actually recognize that term. Brainrot was named Oxford's Word of the Year in 2024. The term describes media/memes that serve as a massive overconsumption of nonsense content online. This term describes the phenomenon of Gen Z (and actually Gen Alpha too) watching multiple videos at the same time on services line Instagram and Tik Tok. The screen will be split between clips of a show, and someone below playing a video game. So you have to choose to focus on one, or none.
How the pandemic shaped a whole generation
Many pop culture experts honestly believe that the global pandemic is to blame for this cultural shift into brainrot.
Remember, Gen Z generally refers to people between 13 and 28 years old. The majority of this generation were in school when the pandemic hit. These were the kids who had their high school sports taken away. They lost their milestone field trips, plays, competitions, and ceremonies. Many of them even had their graduations taken away.
This generation was forced inside. Made to be isolated and "logged in" for up to three years of their school lives. They weren't allowed to hang out with friends, go out for dinner, play sports, or be around many people. Their only main connection to their peers was...online. So as they spent hours, and hours, and hours online, things got pretty absurd.

Honestly, their whole world at that point was pretty absurd. All of the things they were looking forward to were now gone. Senior years, big birthday parties, vacations, and anything else they wanted to do with the final years of their childhood weren't going to happen. Then, they were thrown into a "real world" torn apart by the pandemic and its repercussions.
Their whole world has been dark and absurd for the last 5 years. So the existence of brainrot should be expected.
Brainrot is becoming mainstream across the world
This online brainrot culture has started to bleed into mainstream pop culture now. As more of Gen Z moves into adulthood, the workforce, and gain voice, we're going to hear more and more of this brainrot. Including their slang.
Over the last couple of years, some odd terms have started to breakthrough into mainstream culture. Words like "mogging" or "glazing" have become normal parts of some conversations. You may have even heard someone say "bop" or "zesty" or "slop" in your daily life. This language is going to become more and more popular.
Now there's a whole new form of slang that is breaking through with Gen Z: slurs towards Artificial Intelligence.

We won't go too far down that rabbit hole, but just know that the term "clankers" is only scratching the surface of this one.
