RUSTON, LA

Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker shared with KEEL News on Friday exciting updates about the highly anticipated Buc-ee's development, highlighting the transformative impact it will have on the city. The mega convenience store is set to become one of the largest retail and job-generating projects in Ruston’s history.

Road Work and Construction Timeline

The City of Ruston has already started road work to accommodate the increased traffic expected from Buc-ee's. This $8 million road project is approximately 25% complete. Buc-ee's plans to begin construction in July, with a 12- to 15-month timeline for completion. Walker told KEEL News he expects the new Buc-ee's to be open by late 2026.

Job Creation and Economic Boost

Buc-ee's is projected to bring 250-300 new jobs to Ruston, with pay ranging from $17 to $18 an hour, along with paid 401(k) plans and health insurance. Mayor Walker emphasized the importance of these positions for North Louisiana, especially given the influx of workforce from nearby Grambling State University and Louisiana Tech University.

Development Plans and Business Interest

In addition to the primary Buc-ee's site, the company acquired over 80 acres of land, with 40 acres designated for future development. Although this secondary phase is expected to begin after the main store's completion in 2027, Mayor Walker noted significant interest from restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.

Comparisons to Terrell, TX

The new Buc-ee's in Ruston is anticipated to be 74,000 square feet, even larger than the well-known Terrell, TX location. With approximately 120 gas pumps and 700 parking spots, it is set to become one of the largest travel centers in the region.

Roadblocks and Political Hurdles

Mayor Walker expressed frustration over the extended permitting process for the project, citing the two-year wait for state approvals compared to just six months in Lafayette. Despite the delays, Ruston is moving forward with major infrastructure upgrades, including a new frontage road that will connect Buc-ee's to the City of Grambling.

Community Impact and Revenue Potential

The expected economic impact extends beyond Ruston, with significant revenue increases anticipated for the Lincoln Parish School Board, sheriff’s office, police jury, and the City of Grambling. Mayor Walker highlighted how the additional sales tax revenue could benefit local schools and essential services, calling the Buc-ee's project a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” for the region.

What’s Next for Ruston?

While Buc-ee's construction is the headline, Ruston is also gearing up for the state’s first microchip manufacturing facility. With these developments, Ruston is positioning itself as a burgeoning hub for retail, manufacturing, and regional growth.
