Mother Nature has spent the last several weeks showing us exactly who is in charge here in Louisiana.

One week it was ice and temperatures in the teens. Immediately afterwards, and for the past several weeks, she's turned on the faucet and we have seen rising lakes and potential flash flooding.

If you look at the current conditions from the National Weather Service in Shreveport, it would appear the old bitty is taking a little break and allowing us time to lick our wounds between rounds.

We're looking for sunshine and high temperatures back into the mid to upper 60's. Pretty normal for us, but it was this past Saturday night's weather that sparked conversation in the area.

You might recall that it rained most of the day Saturday, even causing a massive amount of people to miss out on the Krewe of Centaur Mardi Gras Parade. But, it was what happened late in the evening that has some old farmers a little skeptical about any potential plans for an early planting due to Punxsutawney Phil's forecast of an early spring.

It thundered! And a February thunder is never a good thing. As the old wives tale indicates, "if it thunders in February, there will be a frost on that same day in April, running the risk of freezing any newly planted produce in your garden."

That would mean that on or about April 3, we might be in for snow, which would be extremely late for extreme weather in our area. Only time will tell us how accurate that proves for this year, but the old legend has proven accurate many times in the past.

And that leads us to the many old wives tales regarding weather. It's amazing just how accurate some of these have proven themselves to be, but when you see the actual science behind them, it's a little easier to understand.
