Some doctors in Louisiana are reporting the medicine Ivermectin, used in animals and used as a cure for head lice for humans is showing promising results helping COVID-19 patients.

KLFY reports Dr. Lauren Mickey, an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Glenwood Medical Mall in Monroe, La says Ivermectin has been around for many years, and it’s been successful in treating local COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Mickey says that Ivermectin is actually fighting the coronavirus.

"The other treatments, which are helpful, are not medications that actually kill the virus. This drug has been counted as being affective and eliminating the virus by killing it. It’s not been shown to be effective if the people get so sick that they are in the hospital on oxygen or on a ventilator. By then it’s not going to be effective"

A small dose of Ivermectin is first taken by mouth, followed by a similar dose a week later.

The use of Ivermectin has yet to be approved by the FDA to treat COVID-19, and the FDA warns “People should not take any form of Ivermectin unless it has been prescribed to them by a licensed health care provider and is obtained through a legitimate source."
