Can Garrett Nussmeier Claim The Starting Role In Kansas City?
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round of the draft. He was previously graded as a top tier prospect with first round talent, before his draft stock dropped during his final season at LSU. That initial evaluation proves he has the required arm strength, mental abilities, and physical tools to play in the NFL right away.
A direct path to the starting position is currently open for the rookie, even if its for a limited time. The franchise quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is recovering from a serious knee injury. With Mahomes availability for the opening game is in question, the coaching staff must prepare a secondary plan.
The Quarterback Competition In Kansas City
The front office recently brought in Justin Fields to provide a veteran presence on the roster. But since Fields just arrived to the organization...he is entirely unfamiliar with the offensive scheme. He has the same level of experience running these specific plays that Nussmeier has...which is zero.
This situation places the rookie and the veteran on completely equal footing heading into training camp. They are both looking at the same playbook for the very first time. The team will hold an open competition to see who grasps the material faster. Which could give Nussmeier the edge.
Nussmeier Preparing To Lead The Chiefs Offense
Garrett Nussmeier proved he can handle pressure during his time playing at LSU. His early draft projections were based on his ability to make high level throws in difficult situations, against top defensive talent in the SEC. He enters the facility with the exact skill set needed to run a professional offense...and the pedigree to do it as well.
Remember, Nussmeier is the son of former NFL quarterback, and NFL Offensive Coordinator, Doug Nussmeier. Meaning the rookie grew up around high-level football his whole life, and has a grasp of advance football concepts by being brought up in that world.
Garrett Nussmeier fully plans to learn the system from Patrick Mahomes as the year progresses. The organization is prepared to let the rookie take the field if he earns the job in practice right now. If he understands the playbook better than the veteran backup Fields...he will absolutely be the starting quarterback in week one.
