Can Tyree Wilson Get Drafted in the Top 5 of the NFL Draft?

Tyree Wilson was an absolute beast in Texas Tech, but nationally he didn't get a ton of love during the season. Maybe it was because he was a Texas Tech defender, or just that Texas Tech was 4-5 when Wilson went down with a season ending injury against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Even though Tyree Wilson went down early with an injury he had the most sacks per game in the conference. At the time of his injury he was one oftwo power five players with at least 60 tackles, 10 TFLs and 6 sacks this season. He also lead all FBS players for TFLs against teams ranked in the Top 25. 

For his efforts, Wilson was named to multiple All-American Teams and named to the Reese's Senior Bowl roster where the director of the event said Wilson was one of the prospects he was most excited for.

Here's the deal though. Since the season has ended, Wilson's draft stock has skyrocketed with NFL Draft experts like Mel Kiper pegging him to go as high as sixth in the upcoming draft. With that already on the table, Wilson doesn't appear to be headed to the Senior Bowl anymore.

That hype, thanks in part to NFL Draft nerds on Twitter, has really taken off in recent weeks with highlights and comments from NFL Draft personalities all over social media that highlight dominant plays from the EDGE defender.

They also love to share these dominant moments.

There has been talk about Wilson as high as number one with the Chicago Bears likely looking at defensive players at number one. The Cardinals at three, the Seahawks at five, the Lions at six, the Falcons at eight and the Eagles at ten via a trade all make sense with roster makeup and Wilsons ability. Depending on what the Eagles do in free agency with their current roster.

If Wilson is drafted at five, or anywhere before 10th, he'll be the highest drafted Texas Tech player since Donny Anderson went 7th overall to the Green Bay Packers in 1965. Dave Parks was selected first overall in the 1964 NFL Draft. Two Red Raiders have been drafted 10th overall with Michael Crabtree going to the 49ers in 2009 and most recently Patrick Mahomes going to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017.

If the question is will Tyree Wilson be drafted in the Top 15 of the NFL Draft, I'd say that's a blood bank guarantee. Joining Jordyn Brooks and Gabe Rivera as the Red Raiders only defensive first rounders ever. If the question though, is will Tyree Wilson be drafted in the top five? I'd say that's a much tougher bet, but it looks more likely by the day.

A massive combine or pro day might solidify it as the lock of the century.
