Byrd Yellowjackets over West Jefferson, 56-21!
Byrd High School takes the bi-district round playoff game in Class 5-A action Friday night by a large margin over West Jefferson , 56-21. The Yellowjackets were quite impressive in their rushing game against the Buccaneers at Lee Hedges stadium.Byrd fullback back Xavier Long rushed for 198 yards, and tied a school
record of five touchdowns.
They call him "The X Factor." According to the Voice of the Yellowjackets, Charlie Cavell, "the X man put on a show." Cavell says the last Byrd Yellowjacket to accomplish that feat was Arnaz Battle in 1996.
Battle as a wide receiver came up with an amazing 5,137 total yards and rushed for 49 career touchdowns while throwing for 28 more and scored one touchdown on a kickoff return. He played at Notre Dame and then the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Long is a junior, but Byrd also enjoys the amazing senior quarterback Richard Carthon, who had a fabulous night as well, rushing for 175 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown of his own.
Byrd rushed for a season high Friday night of 465 yards against the Buccaneers of West Jefferson. West Jefferson had to make the trip to Shreveport from Harvey, La., on the banks of the Harvey Canal.
Byrd next takes on the Airline Vikings this Friday night in Bossier City at Airline Stadium. Pregame is at 6:30 with kickoff at 7 pm in the regional round of the Class 5-A playoffs. You can hear all the action on your home for Byrd High School football, AM 1130, KWKH.
