Brazil’s Neymar Out for Rest of World Cup with Broken Back

If you watched the Brazil World Cup match against Columbia, you saw superstar player Neymar take a lot of hard hits.

Now we learned Neymar suffered a broken back when he was fouled in the 86th minute.

Brazil will move in to the semifinals after getting a 2-1 win over Columbia, but Neymar (full name: Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior) is out for the rest of the World Cup.

The hometown crowd in Fortaleza did not learn the bad news until after the match. They did see him carried off on a stretcher, which was not a pleasant sight.

It's not the only bad news for Brazil. Team Captain and defensive stalwart Thiago Silva jumped in front of the Columbian keeper just as he was booting the ball. He rammed the keeper to earn his second yellow card of the tournament and was disqualified for Tuesday’s semifinal match.

"We lost Neymar on that play, and based on what I’ve seen, I think it’s going to be tough for him to play," Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari told reporters before the dire diagnosis was known. "He was kneed in his lower back and he was crying out in pain, and I can guarantee it won’t be easy for him to recover based on what the doctor told us."
