Athletes are some of the more vocal celebrities when it comes to social media. Tweeting in the NBA got so out of control that NBA commissioner David Stern had to put rules in place forbidding players from tweeting during games.

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire is in a bit of hot water for one of his tweets. When a fan tweeted at him to try harder next season, Stoudemire sent him a direct message which included a gay slur. The NBA has handed him a $50,000 fine because of the response. This isn’t the first time an athlete has gone too far on some sort of social media outlet.

Should it be more? Should it be less? Should the NBA hold athletes responsible for what they say on their social media accounts even when not officially in season?
