A ‘Green Lantern’ Series Is Coming to HBO Max
Let’s hope this time it’s more brightest day than darkest night.
As part of a massive announcement of programming coming to WarnerMedia’s new streaming service HBO Max, there was this major news for DC Comics fans: Greg Berlanti, the mega-producer behind series likes Arrow, Supergirl, and Titans, is producing two more series for the streamer. One is an anthology series called Strange Adventures. The other is ... Green Lantern.
Here’s Berlanti’s comment on the news, via the press release:
Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television. An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.
Apart from a short-lived animated series in the early 2010s, Green Lantern has only appeared on TV on group shows like Justice League and Young Justice. The character has been mostly confined to DC Comics since the disastrous 2011 blockbuster directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the fearless test pilot who finds an alien ring of power and becomes part of a group of intergalactic space cops. The film bombed with critics and audiences, and has become a punchline, even to Reynolds — who’s included jokes about it in his Deadpool movies and the recent trailer for his upcoming film Free Guy.
Interestingly, Berlanti both produced and co-wrote that Green Lantern movie that everyone hates. But he’s also had enormous success on TV. Perhaps, like so many superheroes, he’s looking for his shot at redemption with the new Green Lantern. As for Strange Adventures, the press release promises a “one-hour drama series will explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans.” Look for both shows some time after HBO Max launches in the spring of 2020.
