Steve Spurrier, the winningest coach at Florida AND South Carolina, announced his unexpected, immediate retirement as the Gamecocks head coach Monday afternoon.

Spurrier never had a losing season as the South Carolina head coach in his previous ten years in Columbia. After losing to LSU this past Saturday in Baton Rouge, South Carolina fell to 2-4 overall, 0-4 in SEC.

Spurrier guided the Gamecocks to a bowl game in each of his previous ten seasons, including last year, when they made their way to Shreveport for the Independence Bowl, a 24-21 win over Miami.
