It's really just plain ol Southern food.  We called it "Soul Food."  It's what you eat on New Year's Day that brings you good luck during the new year, or so they say.

My favorite good luck foods are black eyed peas, cabbage,  corn bread,  greens, fried pork chops and whatever else you can fry.

It's a tradition people have observed for many years.  Ringing out the old year and ringing in the new with something special to eat.  Everyone can use a little good luck in the new year.  And after you watched the giant ball fall in Times Square at midnight,  you thought what am I going to have for dinner on the first day of 2012?

Anything soul food will do the trick. It's grandma's home cooked southern food.  Enjoy your peas and cabbage for good luck.  The rest is just because it tastes good.http://gosoutheast.about.com/od/restaurantslocalcuisine/a/blackeyedpeas.htm

Oh, and it wouldn't be New Year's without champaign  and a midnight kiss.

If you didn't get to use the mistletoe for Christmas,  now's your chance to try again.  It's a new year. You never know,  you may get lucky!
