Thursday night featured the biggest game in area high school baseball. The Captain Shreve Gators brought their undefeated record in district play (7-0) to Airline.

The Gators would leave Bossier City with a close victory in a thriller.

Captain Shreve's pitcher Fielding Matkins was the hero as he brought in the go-ahead run from third base via a sacrifice bunt, to put Captain Shreve ahead 3-2.

Matkins helped out his own cause, by pitching a complete game winner. He gave up seven hits in seven innings pitched, while throwing a total of 120 pitches.

On the opposite side, Airline's Landon Lewis (5-1) struck out six and only gave up three hits.

Vikings infielders did not help Lewis' effort by committing a total of three errors on the night, which brought home two unearned runs.

The two teams remained tied at two until the top of the seventh inning when the Gators starting pitcher, Matkins, laid down a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded to send home the go-ahead run.

The Gators improve to 17-8 (7-0 1-5A District), the Airline Vikings drop to 13-10 (3-4 1-5A District).

The two teams play again tonight at The Swamp, Captain Shreve's home field in Shreveport tonight at 6 p.m.
