Red River United Teachers Union President Jackie Lansdale talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about her disagreement with an idea floated by Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator to arm some teachers in area schools.

Lansdale tells KEEL listeners that the idea of giving guns and gun training to Caddo teachers should be a "last, last last resort." And adds that "I rue the day we would consider something like that."

The union boss says "there are many things we are already doing" to insure student safety and suggests that it may be time to arm and train security officers at individual schools across the parish and that, as of now, "security coordinators do not carry."

In reference to the Prator suggestion, Lansdale says that the Sheriff is approaching the problem from the point of view of a first responder, and that "our responders, in terms of education, are quite different."
