On an outstanding and historic night for college basketball in Northwest Louisiana the Northwestern State Demons upset the Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 68-66.

With the victory, the Demons punch their ticket for March Madness, while SFA who had the best scoring defense in the country will head to the NIT Tournament.

Highlights from last night's thriller:


NSU's senior guard Shamir Davis who was named the Southland Conference tournament's Most Valuable Player led the way with 19 points.

Demons' junior forward DeQuan Hicks contributed to NSU's lead, by scoring 13 points. Hicks also sealed the deal by stealing the ball in a clutch situation with only :02 left in the game.

The largest lead the Demons had in the game was 9 points, when NSU held a 54-45 lead over SFA with 9:45 left in the contest.

Jalan West, the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year posted nine points, had two assists, and grabbed three steals.

The NSU Demons (23-8) get their 23rd victory for only the fourth time in program history.

The Demons' players, coaches, and fans will all find out where they will play tonight on the Selection Sunday Show which will be broadcast live here on 1130 The Tiger at 5 p.m.

Demons head coach Mike McConathy had his seventh Southland Conference finals appearance in 14 seasons, this was the first since 2008.

Ironically, Saturday night's victory comes seven years and a day after the Demons hit a buzzer-beater in the NCAA tournament to upset #15 ranked Iowa 64-63 in 2006.
