Louisiana Deer Hunter Identified in Fatal Hunting Accident Near Kentwood
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of a deer hunter killed in a tragic incident over the weekend. Roberto Garcia, 61, of Baton Rouge, lost his life on Saturday morning, Dec. 28, while hunting on the Sandy Hollow Wildlife Management Area near Kentwood.
According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), the incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. when another hunter reportedly mistook Garcia for a deer. The shooter told authorities that dense vegetation obscured his view and that he did not realize Garcia was behind a deer. Garcia was struck by a .45 caliber muzzleloader and died at the scene before first responders could arrive.
This marks the second hunting-related incident under investigation by the LDWF in just one week. On Monday, Dec. 23, another deer hunter was injured in Zachary after being mistaken for a deer.
In response to these incidents, LDWF is urging hunters to prioritize safety while in the field. Officials emphasize the need to wear hunter orange as required by law and to thoroughly identify the target and its surroundings before shooting. LDWF says these precautions are critical to preventing such tragedies.
The LDWF continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Garcia’s death. No charges have been announced at this time.
