Largest Trade-In in GameStop History
This massive trade-in was made possible due to GameStop's Power Packs program.
The Power Packs program allows collectors to go online and open virtual card packs of various price tags. These packs include Pokémon, football, baseball, and basketball cards.
When you visit the Power Packs website, you can choose a "level" that designates the price point you are willing to gambl—I mean buy... For instance, the starter packs are the cheapest at $25 per pack.

When purchasing the starter pack, the average card value in your pack will total $25, but there is a chance of finding cards up to $200.
You can then choose to either keep the valuable cards or sell them back for a cash payout.
The most expensive pack is the Lunar pack which costs $2,500 to open, but there's a chance of finding cards well over $20,000, which is what happened recently in North Texas.
Grapevine GameStop Breaking Records
According to a statement from GameStop, one of their locations in Grapevine, TX, recently had someone sell their most valuable virtual card, a fully authenticated holographic Gengar.
As someone who grew up playing Pokémon, I have to say that there are much cooler cards out there, but Gengar is definitely one of the best.
Anyway, this card was worth a whopping $30,494.70, breaking the record for highest trade-in in GameStop's history.
It begs the question of how many packs this person had to buy in order to find this specific card. A question only they and their wallet truly knows...
