What states have been hit the hardest by tornadoes? Sometime you stumble upon data that surprises you. The latest data for tornadoes across the country has some very interesting stats. 2024 was a rough year for storms in our area. Louisiana is one of the top states for tornadoes for the year.

There’s no surprise that Oklahoma tops the list. But some of the other states on the list were quite shocking. I’ve never really thought of Illinois or Florida as a tornado hot spot. But those two states land on the top 10 list.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center says there were 1791 tornadoes confirmed in the United States in 2024.

What States Have Had No Tornadoes?

Maine, Nevada and Vermont are the only states that had no tornadoes in 2024. Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island  had only 1 tornado during the year.

What States Had the Most Tornadoes in 2023?

Illinois had the most with 118 followed by Colorado with 88 and Texas with 78. Oklahoma had 75 tornadoes in 2023.

The preliminary data for 2025 shows there have been 145 tornadoes in Texas so far this year. Illinois is 2nd on the list this year with 132 tornadoes. Missouri is 3rd on the list this year with 120 tornadoes. There have been 28 tornadoes in Louisiana so far this year.

What Months Are Busiest for Tornadoes?

This report shows we had 530 tornadoes in May, 356 in April and 213 in July. June was #4 on the list with 151 tornadoes and December, surprisingly is #5 with 127 tornadoes across the United States.
