Shreveport is cracking down on food trucks that are not following the rules.

Councilman Gary Brooks says some of these food trucks are setting up at places where crowds are gathering and they are having an impact on the businesses. He’s referring to the downtown area where crowds hang out and get food at these mobile spots. This often keeps the people from going into the businesses for drinks or food.

Police Chief Wayne Smith says food vendors have to have 2 separate permits, one from the health department and another from the City of Shreveport. The Chief says many of these operators are not in compliance.

Do the Rules Apply to Food Vendors in Shreveport Neighborhoods

Councilwoman Ursula Bowman asked about vendors that might set up in parking lots and sell food. The Chief says they also need to get permits. They also have to have written permission from the owner of the property to be on the lot.

Bowman says there is one vendor who sets up all the time in the parking lot of the old Circle K at Pines and 70th. She says they are not in compliance and should be checked out.

Chief Smith says he saw big crowds on Marshall Street over the weekend gathered around a food truck. He says the vendor was actually blocking a lane of traffic. The Chief says that creates a dangerous situation.

Do Food Trucks Pay Sales Taxes

The question of sales taxes came up during the public safety meeting and Councilman Brooks asked the Chief if these food trucks are paying sales taxes. The Chief said that is a good question, but he would bet not many of them do pay taxes. He says many of them are a cash business. But Brooks says he thinks about 90% of them are non-permitted. And he would really doubt if they are filling out the sales tax form.
