New Study: Bossier City Ranks In 10 Most Dangerous List, Shreveport Doesn’t
Its a common argument around the Shreveport and Bossier City area; that Shreveport is more violent and crime infested than Bossier City. But over the last ten years, mounting statistical evidence has turned that concept on its head.
The Perception That Shreveport Is More Dangerous Than Bossier City
For a long time, the perception between the two cities was that Shreveport was just a violent crime waiting to happen. While on the other side of the Red River, Bossier City was a peaceful utopia. But much of that was built on crime data that was flawed. Because many people were just looking at the raw crime numbers, and providing no frame of reference.
Why Isn't Shreveport As Dangerous As Bossier City
Shreveport is a much larger city than Bossier is. Even after the urban flight has really picked up in the last ten years, Shreveport's population is still a solid 100,000 residents larger than Bossier City. With Shreveport Census data putting the population around 172,000 and Bossier City's hovering around 63,000 residents. With 100,000 more people, the expectation should be that the volume of crimes would be higher.
When researchers are faced with the task of studying cities and states of varying sizes, they use a "per capita" measurement. This is a frame of reference that can even the field with populations. Generally researchers will pick a volume of "per one million", "per 100,000", or even as granular as "per 100" or "out of 10" depending on the sample.
For crime statistics, you often see a "per 100,000" measurement. This is likely due to the measurement used by the FBI for their Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
Bossier City Is Statistically More Dangerous Than Shreveport
The home security firm Reolink recently reviewed the most up-to-date violent crime data from across Louisiana to compile a list of their 10 Most Dangerous Cities for 2025. This is the latest illustration of the difference between Shreveport and Bossier City when you even the population measurements against each other.
If (just using small numbers and aren't based in anything to illustrate a point) Shreveport has 100 violent crimes a year, and Bossier City has 85, it would appear that Shreveport is more violent than Bossier City. But then you have to remember there are over 100,000 more people in Shreveport than Bossier, so per-person, those numbers are going to be way off.
Per capita math would say that Shreveport having 100 violent crimes and a population of 172,000 means there would be a violent crime 58 times per 100,000 residents. While Bossier having 85 violent crimes and a population of 63,000 means there would be a violent crime 135 times per 100,000 residents. Making Bossier more than twice as violent, with less total crimes. (Again, these are made up numbers for an easy to follow example)
