Visitors who enjoy a quiet walk through the R.W. Norton Art Gallery’s Botanical Gardens in Shreveport will want to note a schedule change starting Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026. The R. W. Norton Art Foundation says it is restricting public gate access after an increase in “frequency and severity” of confrontations over garden rules and safety.

What Changes Take Effect in February for RW Norton Garden Access

According to the foundation’s update, multiple walk-through gates will keep opening at sunrise, but several will now close at 3:00 p.m. instead of sunset.

Here is the new schedule the Norton shared:

  • Thora Blvd. gate and south walk-through gates: Open sunrise Wednesday through Sunday, close 3:00 p.m. (previously closed at sunset).
  • Huron Street gate: Open sunrise Wednesday through Friday, close 3:00 p.m. on those days, then remain closed through the weekend.
  • Creswell gate: No change, the gate keeps its normal hours.

The gardens’ published hours have been Wednesday through Sunday from sunrise to sunset, with Monday and Tuesday closed to the public, so these gate closures are a tighter window for access at certain entrances.

Why the RW Norton Foundation says it is Happening

The statement makes two points: the Norton is private property and the public’s access is allowed at the foundation’s discretion, even though admission is free.

The foundation also says it receives no public monies and asks visitors not to lie, argue, threaten, or become confrontational with staff, law enforcement, or other guests. The message ends with a clear warning: “be civil, or be arrested.”

How to plan your next visit to RW Norton Art Gallery Gardens

If your usual routine is an after-work stroll, planning an earlier visit may be the easiest fix. Using the Creswell entrance may also help since that gate’s hours are not changing.

Museum fans can also build a full outing by pairing the gardens with gallery time. The Norton lists museum hours as 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on days it is open.
