Porch Pirates Are Targeting Louisiana Homes Again as Christmas Deliveries Rise
As Christmas packages begin stacking up on doorsteps across Louisiana, law enforcement agencies from Shreveport to Lafayette are reminding residents that porch pirates are watching those same doorsteps with growing interest.
The rush of online shopping brings more deliveries, and with them comes an annual spike in thefts. Police departments say many thefts happen in broad daylight, often within minutes of a package being dropped off.
A Growing Concern Across Shreveport Bossier Neighborhoods
From Bossier subdivisions to rural streets in Rapides Parish, residents are reporting suspicious cars idling near mailboxes and unfamiliar faces walking through neighborhoods. Deputies say porch pirates often follow delivery trucks or circle blocks repeatedly before making a quick grab.
Many of these cases never get reported because residents assume there is little that can be done. Officers encourage reporting every theft, noting that a single lead can help connect multiple cases.
What Louisiana Law Enforcement Is Seeing This Season
Local departments say thieves are becoming more selective. Instead of grabbing everything they see, many now wait for boxes that look like electronics, small appliances, or high value items. Some even return to the same homes repeatedly if they believe the target is easy.

Shreveport police noted that doorbell cameras have helped solve several cases this year, but stressed that many thieves simply cover their faces or keep hoods pulled low.
How Louisianans Can Protect Their Deliveries
Officials across the state recommend simple steps that make a big difference. They encourage residents to track packages closely, bring orders inside quickly, and consider having items delivered to workplaces or trusted neighbors.

Locking drop boxes are becoming more common, especially in neighborhoods that have seen repeated thefts. Police also suggest keeping porch lights on and trimming back bushes or decorations that might give thieves a place to hide.
What To Do If You Become a Victim
Law enforcement stresses that victims should report thefts immediately. Even if a package does not seem valuable, the information helps identify patterns. Officers say that sharing doorbell footage with police and neighbors is one of the fastest ways to warn others and stop repeat offenders. Many neighborhoods have recovered stolen items simply because residents reached out to one another quickly.
