Here Are the Dates When Louisiana Could See the First Frost of the Fall

As we move closer to fall, what kind of weather is on the way? The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a warmer fall season this year. The data shows it might even be very warm through the Halloween season.

When will we see temps start to dip close to freezing? The report says things will start to cool off in November, but it still is not expected to be extremely cold across Louisiana.

When Can We Expect the First Frost of 2025?

The report shows much of the state will get a first frost in mid to late November. The last spring frost of the year happened back on March 14 in Shreveport. So it’s been a while since we have dipped near that freezing mark. A frost is defined as a temp between 29° and 32°F. That can be cold enough to kill some tender plants.

North Louisiana will obviously get colder than other parts of the state. But we are not likely to see a deep freeze any time soon.

What Happens During a Frost or Freeze?

• Light freeze: 29° to 32°F (-1.7° to 0°C)—tender plants are killed.
• Moderate freeze: 25° to 28°F (-3.9° to -2.2°C)—widely destructive to most vegetation.
• Severe freeze: 24°F (-4.4°C) and colder—heavy damage to most garden plants.

How Much Rain Will We See this Fall?

The Farmer’s Almanac says we will likely see below-average rainfall. The report shows we can expect about 4 inches of rain in September which is about 1 inch below normal. October will be pretty dry with about 1.5 inches of rain which is about 1.5 inches below normal.
