Oklahoma Is No Longer The Last State To Witness An EF5 Tornado

It's been 12 years since the last EF5 struck. Recently, the EF5 drought was deemed over after a tornado that occurred in Enderlin, North Dakota, on June 20 this year was upgraded to an EF5. The last EF5 recorded struck Moore, Oklahoma, on May 5, 2013.

Just about every Oklahoman alive today can remember the EF5 tornado that hit Moore in 2013. Schools were leveled. People took shelter in Walmart and a movie theater. After the storm, Oklahomans came together to help their neighbors by sifting through debris and rebuilding their lives.

Now 12 years later, Moore is almost completely rebuilt. Driving through today, it would be hard to tell that an EF5 tornado with wind speeds over 200 miles per hour ripped through the city. But no Oklahoman will ever forget the damage that was caused and the deaths of 24 and the 212 injured.

First EF5 in 12 years recorded in North Dakota.

On Monday, Oct. 6, that the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, North Dakota, announced that the first tornado that struck Enderlin, North Dakota, on June 20 this year was upgraded to an EF5.

According to the statement made by the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the team conducted additional surveys after the storm and worked with wind damage experts to assess the damage. It was found that the maximum wind speed of the tornado was greater than 210 miles per hour and resulted in the derailment of a train and high-end damage to trees.

According to Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer, who was in North Dakota chasing storms when the EF5 struck, the tornado did show "a classic left hook/deviant path near peak intensity." And in footage of the tornado that was caught by North Dakota resident's security camera, the tornado exhibited "the classic liberty bell sheath on the laminar dynamic pipe."

The Enderlin tornado was the deadliest in North Dakota since 1978.

The EF5 in North Dakota did result in three deaths. According to the North Dakota Monitor, the EF5 that struck Enderlin was the deadliest since 1978. At the time of reporting, the tornado was tentatively classified as an EF3.
