University Presidents and Athletic Directors from Conference USA met this past week in Irving, Texas to discuss the idea of a stipend for student athletes to cover the “full cost of attendance.” Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky endorsed the idea and AD’s and presidents followed suit.

New Louisiana Tech Athletic Director Tommy McClelland said that no official vote or legislation passed but that members unanimously agreed to support the notion.

Athletics scholarships typically cover tuition, fees and room and board, but not basic living costs. McClelland says the stipend wouldn’t be for every student athlete, just every scholarship. Tech football coach Skip Holtz has also voiced his support.
