Today is Veterans Day - a federal holiday- which means post offices and banks are closed, as well as most government offices.  It also means we're taking time out to thank our military men and women who have served so courageously and selflessly to keep us free as Americans.

I was honored to  interview Ida Mayor Clyde "Smokie" Maddox on the morning show today on KWKH.   He told me about today's reunion of the 357th Fighter Group.

Activities today and tomorrow are being held  at the new museum in Ida, LA., in North Caddo Parish at the home of World War II fighter pilot,  Capt.  Fletcher Adams.

Activities include special speakers, veterans,  a dinner,  and exciting flyovers.

If you missed  my interview with Mayor Maddox,  here it is:

Some restaurants are saluting veterans with free food.

In fact,  Applebee’s restaurants will serve free entrees to veterans and active-duty military all day today.

Harrah’s Louisiana Downs is giving away complimentary buffet meals to veterans and active-duty military with ID.  You can eat free at Harrah's from 11 a.m.-10 tonight.

As every Veterans Day,  there will be an American Legion Post 6  program at  Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in  Keithville beginning at 11 this morning.  The guest speaker will be the  Rev. Rick Edmonds.

Activities also will be going on at the campus of Louisiana State University Shreveport beginning at 11 a.m,  featuring retired Lt. Col. Charlie Morgan, as speaker.  Col. Morgan is a former B-52 and SR-71 pilot. The names of Louisiana soldiers killed in the Global War on Terror will be read as part of the program.

Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor decorated Michael P.  Murhpy is being honored  at  Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on Elvis Presley Avenue today.   Murphy was killed in Afghanistan six years ago.  Also being honored is Roy Fulco,  of Shreveport.  He's a World War II B-24 pilot and former prisoner of war.

Miss Estelle called in on the KWKH Morning Show  to thank her brother,  who was a prisoner of war,  but made it home alive.   Here's her story:

Another big program is being held this afternoon at 1:30 at Shreveport-Bossier Veterans Memorial Park on Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway.  They'll play patriotic music,  have drills,  a parade of flags, even a planned a fly-over.   The late Robert Stewart is being honored for coming up with the idea for the eagle memorial there.

In 1950,  PFC Thomas O.  Moore , Jr.,  was killed in Korea.   His brother, Freddie Moore called me to talk about his hero, who received a  Silver Star.

Happy Veterans Day,   remember to hug a veteran and support organizations like the "Wounded Warriors."   Fly  Ole  Glory on your porch today,  too.
