Huntington alum, Razorback star, Michael Qualls declares for NBA Draft
Former Huntington Raider, Michael Qualls announced on Wednesday his intentions to become eligible for the NBA draft in June, giving up his final season of eligibility at Arkansas.  Qualls joins teammate and SEC player of the year Bobby Portis, who declared for the draft a day earlier.  Qualls averaged nearly 16 points per game this past season along with 5 rebounds but his signature moments came above the rim---thirteen times during his Razorback career, a Qualls slam was part of ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.   Qualls said he was ready to provide for his family and his son.
LSU thumps Lamar
LSU pounded Lamar last night, 11-2 at Alex Box Stadium to improve their record to 32-6. The Tigers jumped on the Cardinals with a six-run first inning, highlighted by two-run doubles from Kade Scivique and Chris Chinea.  Connor Hale added a run-scoring double in the opening frame as well.  Alex Bregman cranked a solo home run in the second inning and Chinea followed with a two-run dinger in the third.  LSU opens a three-game series at Georgia Friday night.
Warhawks take down Demons
UL-Monroe’s Kodie Tidwell hit a two-run triple to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning, sending the Warhawks on their way to a 5-1 win over Northwestern State in Monroe last night. Former Captain Shreve Gator, Fielding Matkins took the loss despite a nice effort in relief. Matkins took over in the 5th inning and worked out of a small jam.  He left in the 7th with runners on the corners and two outs… his replacement, Hunter Davic surrendered the triple to Tidwell on his first pitch. NSU is at home this weekend to face Central Arkansas.
Pelicans win their way into playoffs, Mavericks set to take on Houston
The New Orleans Pelicans didn’t back into their first playoff appearance in four years--they motored into the post-season with Anthony Davis at the wheel. Davis had 31 points and 13 rebounds in the Pels’ 108-103 win over San Antonio that clinched the 8th and final spot in the Western Conference playoff field.  New Orleans will take on the top-seeded Golden State Warriors in a best of seven first round series that tips off Saturday afternoon in California.  San Antonio trailed the Pelicans by 23 last night before storming back into contention.  Jrue Holiday’s two free throws with 9.5 seconds remaining wrapped things up for the Pels.

The Mavericks head into the playoffs on a winning note, knocking off Portland 114-98 in the regular season finale behind Tyson Chandler’s 22 point, 15 rebound effort. Dallas, the seven-seed, will start their playoffs southeast of the metroplex in Houston Saturday evening.
