In his first round of the Greenbrier Classic, Tiger Woods was up and down Thursday.

As he tries for his fourth PGA Tour win of the year, he offset four birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey.

Woods' score of 71 was 1 over par. He ended the day eight behind clubhouse leader Vijay Singh (-7).

He was undone by his double bogey and his putting.

He started play on No. 10. After birdies on 11 and 12, he was 2 under. The double came on No. 17, a 6-16-yard par-5.

Woods hit his tee shot into the water on the right. He was on the freen in four, after a penalty stroke, and he three-putted from 20 feet, missing a 2-footer.

"I was a little bit off with my game, and on top of that I didn't have the speed of these greens at all," Woods said.

Woods' playing partners fared better. U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson shot a 65 and Steve Stricker carded a 69.
