A local man is behind bars for a hit and run accident that left a pedestrian dead.

Early Saturday morning, patrol officers were called to the 4400 block of Meriwether road, where they found 25-year-old Dexter Lumpkins had been killed after being struck by a pick-up truck, which left the scene. Evidence gathered at the scene suggested Lumpkins was walking along the roadway when he was hit.

Moments later, patrol officers spotted a truck matching that of the suspect's vehicle broken down along a stretch of West 70th Street. The driver, 22-year-old Willie Brown, III, of Shreveport, showed signs of intoxication.

Brown was taken to the Shreveport Police Department's Traffic Bureau, where he submitted to a chemical test. The results showed Brown had a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit.

Brown was booked into the Shreveport City Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, felony hit and run, first-offense DWI, driving under a suspended license and two unrelated outstanding warrants.
