According to multiple reports, she New Orleans Saints have released veteran linebacker Curtis Lofton in an effort to get below the salary cap by Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 when the new league year begins.

After attempting to trade Lofton, the Saints had to cut Lofton due to their salary cap issues. Lofton was due a $4.5 million roster bonus in several days. It would've counted $9.5 million against this year’s cap.

Lofton had spent the last 3 seasons of his 7 year career with the Saints. The inside linebacker hasn’t missed a single game during his pro career, and led the Saints in tackles in 2014 with 144.

He will get plenty of offers in free agency, as he's proven to be productive and healthy over the course of his career with the Falcons and Saints.

UPDATE: According to NFL transaction report, Lofton was terminated with 'failed physical' designation on NFL transactions wire.
