Ryan Reynolds’ wish for a proper Deadpool and Wolverine crossover movie may never come true, but the actor has apparently achieved something pretty close with a small cameo in Logan. According to a new report, the actor recently filmed a scene for Hugh Jackman’s final bow as Wolverine, though it’s unclear if we’ll actually see the two characters share the screen when Logan hits theaters next spring.

Update: Director James Mangold took to Twitter to respond to The Wrap’s report with what can only be described as a “third-degree burn”:

In their defense, it wouldn’t be the first time a filmmaker lied about something this major (ahem, Khan), but for the record, Mangold is refuting reports that Reynolds filmed a Deadpool scene for Logan.

Reynolds himself also denied the story:

Original story continues below…

Per The Wrap, Reynolds recently got back into character as the Merc With a Mouth to film a short scene for Logan. That scene was shot by John Wick co-director David Leitch, who was recently tapped to helm Deadpool 2 following Tim Miller’s exit. According to the report, the scene Reynolds and Leitch filmed is specifically for Logan’s post-credits — further details, like whether or not Jackman also appears in the scene, are unknown. It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility, but given that Logan takes place in the future (where mutants have mostly become extinct), it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Reynolds originally played Deadpool opposite Jackman’s Wolverine in the wildly disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which featured a fairly egregious version of the Merc With a Mouth (notably removing his mouth in the third act). That film inspired Reynolds, a self-professed Deadpool fan, to pursue a proper adaptation for the character. He eventually joined forces with Tim Miller, who used his background in VFX to direct an impressive test reel for Fox — that footage was conveniently “leaked” online and the overwhelmingly positive response convinced Fox to greenlight the Deadpool solo movie.

But with Jackman’s final franchise appearance in the can, it seems unlikely that Reynolds will have a chance to give Deadpool and Wolverine the big-screen do-over they deserve.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017. With Deadpool 2 filming next year, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see Reynolds back in action sometime in 2018.
