It's Presidents Day. Observed on the third Monday in February, it's a day to celebrate all U.S. Presidents past and present.

Presidents Day was established in 1885 to recognize President George Washington‘s birthday which is on the 22, and the holiday is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government.

The holiday was moved to Monday in 1971 because of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, put into place to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.

With this holiday, you might be wondering just what is closed today.

  • Most government offices, federal and state, are closed.
  • Post offices are closed and mail will not be delivered.
  • Trash and garbage collection is suspended in Shreveport. Normal Monday trash pick up will be scheduled for Tuesday, February 16.
  • Most public buildings, such as libraries, are closed, or may be open only for limited hours.
  • Most banks are closed in recognition of the holiday.
  • Schools are closed. This includes primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities.

If you have the day off enjoy it!!
