Former Haughton High star quarterback Dak Prescott made it official Tuesday, signing his rookie contract to play for the Dallas Cowboys for the next four years.

Prescott, who was born in Sulphur, was chosen in the fourth round – 135th overall – in April’s NFL draft after a record-smashing career at Mississippi State. He is expected to compete with Kellen Moore for the backup quarterback spot behind returning starter Tony Romo, and will be groomed to be Romo’s eventual successor. He is the first quarterback Dallas has drafted since Texas A&M’s Stephen McGee – also in the fourth round – in 2009.

Terms of Prescott’s deal were undisclosed. The Cowboys also inked their other fourth-round pick, defensive end Charles Tapper from Oklahoma, to a contract Tuesday.

Prescott threw for 39 touchdowns and ran for another 17 his senior season at Haughton and holds almost every school standard for passing.

After his stellar career with the Buccaneers, Prescott lit up the Southeastern Conference for four seasons, breaking nearly every school record for the Bulldogs.

As a junior, Prescott led the Starksville, Miss., school to a number-one ranking early in the season and was a Heisman Trophy candidate. He is one of three quarterbacks in SEC history with over 8,000 yards passing and 2,000 yards rushing (Tim Tebow of Florida and Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M are the other two), and was just the fourth player in FBS history to pass for 60 touchdowns and rush for 40 (Tebow, Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan, and Colin Kaepernick of Nevada).

He set a school record and tied an SEC record in 2015 when he accounted for seven touchdowns (five passing, two rushing) against Arkansas. He holds the Orange Bowl record for passing yards in a game (453 against Georgia Tech in 2014).

Among the many accolades he received at Mississippi State, Prescott was named first-team All-SEC in both his junior and senior seasons, and was an honorable mention All-American his junior year. He was named Most Valuable Player of this past season’s Belk Bowl after throwing for 380 yards and four touchdowns in a 51-28 win over North Carolina State. Prescott also was named MVP of the 2016 Senior Bowl, which showcases the top college talent for NFL scouts.
