With those shiny new Schumacher-esque suits and Rita Repulsa’s swampy Lady Gaga-as-a-Mortal Kombat-character aesthetic, you’d think that little else about the new Power Rangers movie could surprise us. You would think wrong. Today in “What the heck is going on with this Power Rangers reboot?” a new image from the upcoming film has given us our first look at their take on Alpha-5, and it is WACKY.

Wacky is an understatement, actually, but we’ll let you be the judge after taking a gander at this concept art from IGN:

Yeah, no, wait, what. As someone who is fairly ambivalent about Power Rangers (I did watch and enjoy my fair share after school, so don’t @ me), even I’m baffled by this bizarre redesign. The new Alpha-5 is definitely more alien than bot, like something out of a Luc Besson nightmare. (A Luc Besson Power Rangers movie might be kind of awesome, come to think of it.)

In more optimistic news, Bill Hader is lending his voice to Alpha-5 in the new Power Rangers film, which also stars Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon. As for the super-powered teens, Dacre Montgomery is Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler is Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott is Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin is Zack the Black Ranger and Becky G is Trini the Yellow Ranger.

Power Rangers was directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) and hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
