Phelps finished in 1:53.34, Matsuda in 1:54.01

"The race felt good. I wanted to do what I usually do when I'm in better shape," said Phelps. "I wanted to step on it from the get go."

Phelps led early in the race but surrendered the margin to Matsuda. However, Phelps had a great turn in the last 50 meters and came back to win.

"I saw the other swimmers at the 150 (meters) and I put my hips into it," said Phelps. "I know there's a lot more I can do in that race."

Besides the 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle, Phelps is also swimming the 100 butterfly and 200 IM as well as three relays.

The USA settled for bronze in the 4x100 freestyle on Sunday and Phelps was second to the USA's Ryan Lochte in the 200 freestyle.
