A crowd estimated at around 1,700 lined up at Southern Hills Community Center Wednesday, hoping to get one of the spots for free swim lessons offered by Rock Solid Sports and Shreveport Parks and Recreation.

The lessons, which were offered on a first come, first served basis, are known officially as Project Swim, a campaign that was created after six Shreveport teens drowned in the Red River in 2010.

Lessons will get underway on June 8 at all SPAR pools and will include five 70-minute lessons.
