David Wain is assembling quite the cast for A Futile and Stupid Gesture, his new National Lampoon biopic for Netflix, which is set to begin filming sometime this month. In addition to casting Joel McHale as Chevy Chase (particularly inspired given their Community connection), Wain has landed comedian Jon Daly for Bill Murray and Seth Green for mockumentary king Christopher Guest.

Per Deadline, Daly and Green have joined the cast of A Futile and Stupid Gesture, based on Josh Karp’s 2006 book of the same title that explored the creation of National Lampoon magazine and the tragic fall of its co-founder, Doug Kenney. Will Forte will play the role of Kenney, with McHale and Broad City’s John Gemberling as SNL icons Chevy Chase and John Belushi, respectively.

Daly, best known for his work with Nick Kroll on The Kroll Show, will play fellow SNL vet Bill Murray, with actor and Robot Chicken creator Seth Green as Christopher Guest — the latter of whom directed comedic classics like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, and wrote This Is Spinal Tap.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture also stars Domhnall Gleeson as National Lampoon co-creator Henry Beard, Thomas Lennon as SNL’s first head writer Michael O’Donoghue, and Veep’s Matt Walsh as Animal House and Vacation franchise producer Matty Simmons.

Written and directed by David Wain of Wet Hot American Summer fame, A Futile and Stupid Gesture will examine how the National Lampoon magazine changed the comedic landscape in the ’70s and ’80s. There is no release date as of yet, but it looks as though the film will hit Netflix sometime next year.
