A tragic accident at the Thunder Road Raceway claimed the life of a man when he was struck by his brother's racecar.

In a press release from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, it states:

An Atlanta, Texas, man died after being struck by a dragster at the Thunder Road Raceway in Gilliam on Monday, said Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator.

Steven Smith, 60, was part of the Smith-Fair Racing crew that was conducting test runs at the raceway as part of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) licensure process. During staging, the driver, 55-year-old Stuart Smith, also of Atlanta, accidentally backed over his brother, Steven, said CPSO Lt. Michael Gray.

The Caddo Sheriff's Office, Caddo Fire District 8, and North Caddo EMS responded to the raceway. Steven Smith was flown by Life Air Rescue to University Health where he later died.

The accident was investigated by the Caddo Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit. Gray said alcohol was not a factor. No charges have been filed.
