LSU Football Flashback: Defensive End Chuck Wiley

Former NFL defensive end Chuck Wiley made quite an impact in his 4 seasons at LSU. At 6'4, 275 pounds, he was a beast inside, playing defensive tackle in Baton Rouge from 1994-1997.

Wiley left his mark on the field, earning Second-Team All-SEC (AP) honors his sophomore year of 1995, and 1996 First-Team All-SEC (AP) and 1997 First-Team All-SEC (AP, Coaches, Football News) honors his junior and senior seasons.

Lettering all 4 years with the Tigers, Wiley left LSU with 19 sacks, including 4 in one game versus South Carolina his sophomore year.That marks holds up today as the school record for most sacks in a single game.

Perhaps the best part of Wiley's game was his ability to play best in the big ones. During a 1997 upset of #1 ranked Florida, Wiley came up with a timely sack. In a win at Alabama the same season, Wiley generated 6 tackles, 2 QB sacks, and 1 giant fumble recovery in end zone for TD.

As skilled as he was on the field, he was just as good in the classroom. Wiley was elected to the Athletic Council by the student body in 1997. As an All-Academic SEC honoree, Wiley received the Jessie Owens award in 1996 (for the highest GPA among LSU's African American athletes). He graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology in 1997. After his NFL career, he went back to LSU and earned his M.S. in Sports Management in 2005.

Following his career at LSU, Wiley was drafted into the NFL by the Carolina Panthers. Selecting him 62nd overall in the 3rd round, the Panthers plugged him in at defensive end. He missed his rookie season with an injury, but started all 16 games for the Panthers in 1999. In 2000, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, tallying 5 sacks in two seasons.

Wiley signed with Minnesota in 2002, playing 3 seasons with the Vikings, and eventually ending his career on IR with the New York Giants.
