BATON ROUGE, La.— Catcher Tyler Moore and shortstop Alex Bregman each collected eight RBI Tuesday night, and five LSU pitchers combined on a six-inning no-hitter as No. 8 LSU blanked Northwestern State, 27-0, in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU, playing its final regular-season home game, improved to 37-14-1, while Northwestern State dropped to 30-22. The game was stopped in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning in the area.

LSU concludes the regular season with a three-game SEC at Auburn beginning at 6 p.m. CT Thursday.

Pitchers Jared Poche’, Kyle Bouman, Nate Fury, Kurt McCune and Joe Broussard combined to no-hit Northwestern State in the six-inning contest, limiting the Demons to just two base runners on a hit batsman and a walk. The no-hitter was the first recorded by LSU since March 14, 1979, when Bobby Landry fired a seven-inning no-hitter against Southern Mississippi.

Bregman and Moore each had a grand slam and eight RBI, just one shy of the school record for RBI in a single game. The last time an LSU player recorded eight RBI was April 19, 2000, when catcher Brad Cresse accomplished the feat against Tulane.

The 27-run margin of victory was the largest in school history, and he last time LSU scored 27 runs in a game was March 22, 1998 against Arkansas in the original Alex Box Stadium.

The contest was also the first multi-grand slam game for LSU since Leon Landry, Nicolas Pontiff and Micah Gibbs each hit grand slams on March 7, 2009 against Illinois.

“It’s really hard to put into words a description of this game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Northwestern State has a very good team that is battling to win its conference title this weekend, and we have tremendous respect for their program. It was just one of those nights where we squared up on pitches and swung the bats exceptionally well. Our guys are excited and looking forward to a great series at Auburn with a lot at stake, including a chance to win the SEC West.”

Northwestern State starter Andrew Adams began the first inning by issuing back-to-back walks. Senior Sean McMullen then hit an RBI double to left-center field to score shortstop Bregman. With the bases loaded, Adams walked senior third baseman Christian Ibarra to score Chris Chinea.

Moore then blasted a two-out grand slam over the right field fence. After centerfielder Andrew Stevenson singled and stole second, rightfielder Mark Laird hit an RBI single through the right side.

In the second inning, LSU extended the lead to 11-0. With the bases loaded, Moore hit a two-out double to center field to clear the bases.

After a 35-minute weather delay during the third inning, LSU scored seven more runs. Pinch hitter Jake Fraley hit a two-run home run over the right field fence for his third home run of the year. With two outs, Moore hit an RBI single to right field to plate McMullen.

Chris Sciambra followed with a double to right-center field to score Moore and Ibarra. Cade Stone reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to score Sciambra. Bregman then hit a double to left-center field to score Stone.

The Tigers added six more runs in the fourth inning. Freshman Kramer Robertson hit a two-run home run, the first of his career. Bregman hit a grand slam in the frame to give LSU a 24-0 lead.

Bregman later hit his second home run of the game, this time a three-run dinger.

Poche’ (7-3) earned the win for LSU after pitching a scoreless first inning. Adams (1-2) was charged the loss after giving up seven runs on three hits.
