The LSU Tigers got a 7-1 victory over 14th ranked Ole Miss Thursday night and picked up their 47th win of the regular season, equaling the mark of the 1986 LSU team that won 47 regular season games in a 59 game schedule.

In 1992, the NCAA standardized a 56 game schedule.  To put it plainly, at 47-7, this is the best regular season team LSU has ever had.  The Tigers still have two games against Ole Miss this weekend to try and extend their win mark.  The 22 SEC victories also ties an LSU record held by the 1986 and 1997 teams.

2nd ranked LSU jumped on the Rebs early, scoring two runs in the first and scoring the first five runs of the game.  The Tigers equaled their season best output for home runs with four.  Mason Katz hit his 14th home run of the season (his first in a month.)  Christian Ibarra and Sean McMullen also went deep.  Raph Phymes had an inside the park home run that ended with him getting up-ended by the Ole Miss catcher on a play at the plate.  The incoming throw was well up the third base line and Rhymes flipped over the catcher coming up short of the plate, but he was able to easily step on home to score.

Sophomore lefty Cody Glenn earned the win allowing one run in seven innings.  Paul Mainieri said of Glenn, "He just seems to get better with every outing."

LSU and Ole Miss play Game 2 Friday at 7pm.  There will be a special presentation before Game 2 honoring the 20 year anniversary of the 1993 national championship team and a re-naming of the diamond at Alex Box Stadium as "Skip Bertman Field."

Game 3 will be on Saturday at noon.  Listen to each game on 1130 the Tiger.
