Big news out of Ruston, Louisiana Tech athletic Director Tommy McClelland held a news conference today to introduce the new women’s basketball head coach. And it’s Tyler Summit… the 23 year old son of Hall of Fame Tennessee coach Pat Summit.

Tyler has only two years coaching experience as an assistant at Marquette.  He takes over a Lady Techster program that sunk to it's lowest of lows.... two straight losing seasons, the first ever for the program.  Last year, under former Techster All-American Teresa Weatherspoon, the team went 12-20 and amassed the lowest win total in program history.

This is the first major hire for new A.D. Tommy McClelland.  It's also the second consecutive hire of a head coach who is the son of a Hall of Fame Coach.  Hall of Famer Lou Holtz's son, Skip Holtz, took over the football program before the 2013 season.  Now, Tyler Summitt, the son of Hall of Famer Pat Summitt will try to restore the Lady Techster basketball program to it's previous heights.

I wonder, what's next?  Will La Tech hire the son of Tony LaRussa or Skip Bertman to coach the baseball program?  Unlikely.  I can honestly say I was excited to hear the news about the hiring of Tyler Summitt and I hope he can bring the Lady Techsters back to a place of prominence in NCAA Women's Basketball.
